Washington State Parks Free Days for 2014

With Spring finally here and summer quickly approaching, we know you’re probably itching to get out into the great outdoors. And we’re blessed with so many great state parks here in Washington that there’s no shortage of places to go.

If you’re starting to plan that first summer hiking or fishing trip, or you’d just like to get out of town for a weekend, mark the follow days on your calendar—they’re free!

Yes, on select days throughout the 2014 spring and summer season, the Washington State Park and Recreation Commission is celebrating its 101st birthday with some free admission days to its over 100 parks, trails, and recreational sites across the state.

May 11 – A spring Sunday “free day

June 7-8 – National Trails Day and Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife Free Fishing Weekend

June 14 – National Get Outdoors Day

August 25 – National Park Service birthday

September 27 – National Public Lands Day

November 11 – Veterans Day

Here’s some more information on free days, courtesy of the Renton Reporter:

Free days are in keeping with legislation that created the Discover Pass, a $30 annual or $10 one-day permit required on recreation lands managed by Washington State Parks, the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW) and the Department of Natural Resources (DNR). The Discover Pass legislation provided that State Parks could designate up to 12 “free days” each year when the pass would not be required to visit state parks. Discover Pass is required to access DFW and DNR Lands on State Parks free days.

Go Back in Time with Foggy Noggin Brewing

Foggy Noggin Brewing in Bothell is one of the most beloved breweries in the region, with its rotating selection of seasonal craft brews and their upbeat, funky personality. And in just a week, Foggy Noggin will have a special tasting event, featuring four vintages of their Anniversary Ale. Space is limited, so register now if you’d like a taste!

The Foggy Noggin folks will be having two sessions with 20 people each, between 6:00 pm and 7:30 pm on Thursday, March 20; and Friday, March 21. The ticket price is $30 per person, but you get a whole lot in return: Not only will you be able to taste the 2011, 2012, 2013, and 2014 editions of their Anniversary Ale, but you’ll also take home your own bottle of the 2014 Anniversary Ale (English old Ale) before it’s even officially released.

Indeed, Foggy Noggin is also known for its community roots, founded by long-time Bothell resident Jim Jamison:

What started out as a gift from Jim's wife (Kim) in 1992, he became hooked on taking brewing beer to the highest level.

Jim's love for beer began at Produce Row Cafe in Portland, OR during the summer of 1979. This was the place for beer. Every beer available for import into the State of Oregon was here. Jim tried each and every one of them and became obsessed. The early 80's started the microbrewery revolution and Jim enjoyed expanding his beer-horizons.

With the craft beer movement in full force, Jim recognized a void in education for the beer enthusiast. Northwest Brew News (NWBN) was born, the region's largest subscription based beer publication took off in 1994 and grew to over 15,000 subscribers by 1997. It became too large and required too much time as a hobby.

Vox Docs Documentary Film Festival in Leavenworth

As enticing as a blockbuster flick can be, sometimes you just can’t beat the intimacy of watching an independent documentary at an independent theater. If you’re looking for some good entertainment this weekend, check out the Vox Docs film festival over at the Snowy Owl Theater in Leavenworth.

Produced by the Icicle Creek Center for the Arts and running from today, March 7 through tomorrow, Saturday, March 8, this weekend documentary festival will showcase some of the most acclaimed documentaries of the year that have been taking home awards at other festivals.

Also bear in mind that this festival gives back—all ticket proceeds will be donated to local non-profit organizations. Some of last year’s recipients included the Initiative for Rural Innovation and Stewardship (IRIS), Chelan-Douglas Land Trust, the Cascade School District Educational Foundation, the Leavenworth Winter Sports Club and the Icicle Creek Youth Symphony.

There will also be educational activities on topics like traveling documentaries and using documentary in the classroom.
